From Old English teru, teoru, from Germanic *terwo-, probably a derivation of *trewo- ( > English tree), from Indo-European *drew ‘tree’. Cognate with Dutch teer, German Teer, Swedish tjära.

Q. I have carpet that I have cleaned many times and I cant get the tar stains out of it. Is there any tricks to getting it out?

A. I would try wd-40 or clear kerosene. Just be careful because of the smell from kerosene. I've also used something called afta. You can get it hardware stores. You just need to let it soak for a little
