Coating is a covering that is applied to the surface of an object, usually referred to as the substrate. In many cases coatings are applied to improve surface properties of the substrate, such as appearance, adhesion, wetability, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and scratch resistance. In other cases, in particular in printing processes and semiconductor device fabrication (where the substrate is a wafer), the coating forms an essential part of the finished product. Coating and printing processes involve the application of a thin film of functional material to a substrate, such as paper, fabric, film, foil or sheet stock. This article discusses what is frequently termed 'roll-to-roll' or 'web-based' coating. A roll of substrate, when wound through the coating machine, is typically called a web. Coatings may be applied as liquids, gases or solids. Coatings can be measured and tested for proper opacity and film thickness by using a drawdown card. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I own a Mossberg 500 'Breecher' shotgun with a powder coat finish on it. I've had it about two years now and have recently noticed what looks like a dusting of rust on the barrel and the magazine tube after every couple of weeks or so. I don't want to use any abrasive wools as I don't want to ruin the finish of the powder coating. Also, as it is powder coated, I don't want to smear it with gun oil either. I was at a competition trap shoot for a weekend, camping in a van. No heat, no nothing. I didn't know what it would be like the first night..but.. It was in the 60's during the day, in the 30's at night, and next to the Great Lakes. I slept with my gun propped against the wall (unloaded obviously) next to my cot...I should've known better. I get up and start getting ready to go out and shoot when I noticed my gun (with a matte, sort of powder-coat textured finish) went from blue to orange. I had to go shoot, but then came back and wiped it all down with Break Free CLP. The rust disappeared, the gun looked great, like nothing happened.
